Amakati Report – 18 & 19 June 2016

Dear Amakati,

Report on Amakati sailing exploits this past weekend

Durban Port Festival this past weekend 18-19th June
As part of the festivities of the International Hydrography Day and the Transnet Port Festival, we as the Amakati, at the last minute, undertook to join in the planned Pacer 27 racing for the weekend. A total of 9 Halcats sailed this event.

The wind was on the light side, especially on Sunday, but we did manage to get in 2 races on Saturday and only 1 race on Sunday. The podium positions ended up with Neil Wadsworth winning with a total of 4 points, myself 2nd with 5 points and Gavin Wadsworth taking 3rd with 9 points.

See results on RNYC web site.

Forthcoming Events.

The Boat Show, this weekend from Friday 24- Sunday 26th June.
Pacer 27 trips and keelboat racing have been scheduled with more info on this during the week post our sailing committee meeting.

If possible, with commitment from fellow Amakati, we may arrange a catamaran race, but launching will be a problem with low tides around midday over the weekend and the international slipway utilised with the boat show. However, we may be able to make a plan and launch from the Rod and Reel, for those really committed to sailing?

Waterfront Catamaran Racing – Waterfront Winter Special 1 on Saturday 2nd July and Sunday 17th July.
With good high tide occurrences around 14:30 on both these days, we will be running the above series with racing commencing at 12:30. The racing will be properly organised with water based bridge starts in the event of NE – Easterly breezes.

The NOR and SI will be out by next week, so choose your boat for the event. Racing will be scored on SCHRS so all designs and configurations are welcome. We would like to run at least 2 starts if not more, where we can accommodate novice to competent to “rock star” starts. There will be prizes for combined overall podium places, winners of each start and winners of class where 3 or more of a class combined with configuration exist. We want to accommodate everyone!

Woza Friday Winter Special 1 – 22nd July and Special 2 on 5th August.
With the days getting longer it was decided we should insert a “pre-season” Woza Winter 2 Friday Special Series. The tides are just right for these two planned Woza Fridays with high tides just before 17:30 on both sailing days along with a consecutive Full then New Moon occurrence between 2-3 days before these sailing dates. This means great tidal heights, at the right time for racing. Hopefully we will also have just the right wind too?

See you on the water and around the club for “Serious Catamaran Sailing and Awesome Fun”.
