KZN Dart 18 Provincials 2017

This past weekend saw 11 darts take part in the Regional Championships, hosted by RNYC and held offshore Durban.  3 Boats traveled down from Stilbaai Yacht Club and two from East London Yacht Club, with all the boat choosing to launch off the beach, with the help of a tractor and driver, very generously supplied by Hilton Kidger of the Durban Ski Boat Club.  It was amazing to stage an event, with the Chairman of the class association, Vernon Brown, National SAS Chairman, Darryl Johnson and Northvaal SAS Chairman and current Dart Champion, Ben Mienie participating.

Friday evening saw most of the guys arriving at RNYC, to enjoy excellent hospitality and cold beers after a long trip.  Saturday delivered perfect weather, with lots of sun and a decent wind for sailing.  Race Officer, Hemraj Gokal got the racing under way and managed to get 4 well run races.  At the end of the day, Rob Samways had a healthy lead with Ben Mienie and Morgan Ruach from East London in second and third positions. After racing, the sailors were invited to see the new PWC premises and were fed some excellent soup and very welcomed beers.  Our thanks and appreciation to Cuane Hall and Hilton Kidger for sponsoring this.  Thereafter, it was back to

Royal Natal to enjoy more beer and supper.

Sunday, once again delivered beautiful sunny conditions but with the winds being too light to sail.  The bridge went out with the mark layers to assess the situa

tion, while the fleet stayed on the beach, enjoying the sights around them 😊.  Racing got underway just after 11.30 with Hemraj getting in two more races, allowing for a discard in the results.  Ben showed the fleet why he is the King of Darts, but was still short of points, giving the trophy and title to Rob Samways by one point. Results are attached.

A very festive prize giving was held on the beach under gazebo’s supplied by RNYC.  The following people must be thanked for their hard work in ensuring that this event went ahead despite some difficult situations just before the event was due to be held.
