Report back : Optimist sail training camp at Midmar

Junior SailingDuring the long weekend in December (16 – 18th) we arranged an Optimist sail training camp as an introduction to sailing for 10 boys, 8 from Highbury and 2 from Thomas More.

The weekend was really successful and every boy not only got to grips with the basics of sailing an Optimist but also had a blast off the water.

In order to arrange enough boats, we borrowed 3 boats from Royal Natal Yacht Club.  I would like to extend our gratitude to the Club for making these boats available and to specifically record our thanks to Jennifer Weyer for assisting in allocating the 3 boats to us and arranging that each boat was properly equipped.

Before the event, I found that the buoyancy of one of the boats was no longer functional and have replaced the buoyancy bags with high density foam which I believe will be far more durable.  During the event, we lost a sprit and a crack in one of the boat’s deck boards split completely.  Both these issues have been resolved.

Here are some of the pictures of your boats on the water!

I have also written to both Schools informing them of the weekend and the opportunities that exist and to encourage them to expose their boys and girls to sailing.

Please would you table our thanks at your next meeting.

Kind regards

Jerome McLoughlin
