As members will know our visiting sailing coach, Lauritz Walsoe from the Royal Danish Yacht Club, has now returned home following his 8 month stay in Durban as part of the International Council of Yacht Clubs youth exchange program. We were indeed privileged to enjoy hosting Lauritz and we are very grateful to him for the sail training knowledge and coaching skills he shared with us during his stay. Our sail training programs have benefited enormously.
As a top ranked Laser sailor the final training exercise saw seven hardened dinghy sailors participate in a long haul sail out to the Fairway mark on Easter Monday. With a fresh north easterly blowing and sloppy sea state the sailors had their work cut out. The long beat out to sea tested the endurance and hiking ability of the sailors with Lauritz showing the fleet how it is done. The downwind ride home provided some exhilarating surfing opportunities. Lauritz led the fleet home in less than two and a half hours and the exercise proved a fitting farewell for our young friend. We are grateful to Campbell Alexander for rallying the lasers sailors for the event.
