A number of RNYC members went up to Henley Midmar Yacht Club to participate in the first of a three series SAS KZN Grand Slam event.
The first day saw fairly light winds of between 4-7 knots which allowed for 3 races to be sailed. The second day had a bit stronger winds of between 8-12 knots with 5 races taking place, this resulted in a full complement of 8 races, thereby allowing for 2 discards in the event. RNYC were well represented on the bridge with former Rear Commodore of RNYC and now present Commodore of HMYC, Derek Wilkes as the Race Officer and RNYC Member Rob Bell as the Principal Race Officer.
As you will see from the attached results, our members did us proud. In the two open fleets, which was made up of all boats that did not make class of a minimum of 5 boats, Steve Hegerstrom, Jeremy Kriek and Richard Potgieter, achieved 4, 5 & 6th in the Open Fleet 2 with Rob Samways, Gavin & Geertje Wadsworth and Justin Von Niebel getting a 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the Open Fleet 3. Paul Chanquion and Jethro Tintinger both achieved first place in the Laser Standard and Radial classes, it was also their Regional Championships (previously known as Provincial Championships). Well done to all of our participants.
Our thanks and appreciation go to SAS and HMYC on a well-run event, and we can only encourage more members to participate in the next part of the series to be held at Zululand Yacht Club over the weekend of 30th April to 2nd May 2016.
