Members will have noticed some interesting flags flying at the Clubhouse. Some can be forgiven for mistaking the Danish national flag for the PYC burgee and for those that may not know the crown and 3 stars are the colours of the Kongelig Dansk Yachtklub otherwise known as the Royal Danish Yacht Club. These flags are flown as a courtesy to our young visitor and part time sailing coach Lauritz Walsøe and will fly for the duration of his 8 month stay.
As mentioned in last week’s newsletter Lauritz is being hosted by the Royal Natal Yacht Club during his gap year as part of the International Council of Yacht Clubs (ICoYC) Youth Exchange Program. We are delighted to have such a talented young sailor at our club to assist in the development of our youth sail training program.
While in Durban Lauritz will be providing sail training and coaching for our many youth programs while also performing volunteer work at local hospitals before returning to Copenhagen to study medicine. Members are invited to visit the Clubhouse and meet this wonderful young ambassador for Denmark and the KDY and we trust that you will extend our traditional “RN” hospitality to our young visitor.
We are grateful to Jeremy and Tracy Kriek for hosting Lauritz and the members of the medical fraternity who are providing Lauritz with the “hands on” work experience during his stay. We are also grateful to Commodore Lars Ives of the KDY for introducing Lauritz to us and our friends at the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron for spearheading the ICoYC Youth Exchange Program of which the RNYC is the first participant. If you would like more information about the program please contact the Commodore.
