2016/2017 Sailing season was a very successful one.  We were able to sail each Wednesday evening that RNYC hosted – hosting  twelve races in total:  averaging +- 25 yachts out on the water enjoying the Durban weather.

Thank you to our team that went out week after week diligently to ensure our sailors were catered for.  RNYC for hosting us, feeding and keeping us hydrated.  Our teams on the water, I was ably assisted by Hans Dettman, Jennifer Weyer, Vanessa Weldon, Derek and Chris, Moses and Victor and of course our faithful Steven B.H.  Our very hard working volunteers and of course our Commodore Mr Rose for always goes over and above in supporting our effect to ensure that we are following International Best Practice.

We were honoured, thanks to Mr Keith Brodie, to have Standard Bank Wealth Management on board sponsoring, not only our sailing costs but also our prizes and I have to thank Adele von Landsberg and her team for co-ordinating everything for us and presenting prizes on a Wednesday.   Adele, Donovan and several others from Std Bank came along on Wednesdays to try their skills at sailing and enjoy a cold beer.  The committee boat in December had members of Std Bank taking lots of photos and enjoying watching everyone sailing from the water.  Thoroughly enjoyed by all.

Also, carrying on from the previous season when we launched our CANSA fund raising, wherein we raised R34 108, thanks to the generosity of our sailing families, friends and visitors, our campaign was well received and Nadia Baderoon-Ball, who represents the CANSA ASSOC in Umbilo Road, became our middle-man and a colleague.  At the end of our sailing season in March, we had, through our sailors and several events, which we hosted, raised a fantastic R66.500.  We didn’t have the final figures until into April, but were able to present Nadia with a Cheque for R52000 at the end of the season, the balance of which followed, giving CANSA Assoc twice the amount of money to go out and help our community.  Nadia also put on Breast exams for us and Men’s prostrate exams and mole mapping and has supplied our Club with sunscreen for our sailors.  A very BIG thank you to everyone who supported our cause and hopefully, this coming season, our 160th – we will go from strength to strength.

Thank you to EVERYONE for your support – it is always appreciated.

Yours in sailing.
